Improving health and human rights in Zambian prisons

Umiddelbare mål :

1) Improved inmate empowerment to support improvements health and nutrition in the three Kabwe Correctional Facilities (maximum security male, medium security male and maximum female prison), including improved capacity of inmate volunteers to do farming activities 2) Increased capacity by Prisoners Future Foundation (PFF) to implement health projects

Målgrupper :

The primary target groups for this intervention are the inmate volunteers, the most vulnerable groups in prison specifically the seriously ill (90 patients every day, 175 annually), pregnant and breastfeed-ing mothers (4 every day, 15 annually), 50 juveniles (80 annually) as well as children aged 0-4 (6 every day, annually 30) and PFF through capacity building interventions. The secondary target group, which will be reached through safe drinking water and hygiene procedures, deworming and other interventions is the full prison population in the three Kabwe facilities, a daily average of 3,400 persons. The majority are males and about 100 are females. Another secondary target group is ZCS at local facility level in Kabwe and ZCS HQ and finally the PHAC.

The African prisons are well known for holding human beings in filthy and overcrowded environments, where access to justice and health services are poor. Overall Objectives: Improved health and human rights in Zambian prisons 1) Improved inmate empowerment to support improvements health and nutrition in the three Kabwe Correctional Facilities (maximum security male, medium security male and maximum female prison), including improved capacity of inmate volunteers to do farming activities 2) Increased capacity by Prisoners Future Foundation (PFF) to implement health projects Activities center on building capacity of the partner organisation PFF, organising and supporting inmate volunteer teams for improving health and building capacity for healthy food production.
